A tumor in the lungs moves with each breath, making it difficult to accurately target with standard radiation therapy. The pinpoint accuracy of Precision CyberKnife in tracking lung tumors allows high doses of targeted radiation to be delivered precisely to the tumor without damaging healthy surrounding tissue or critical structures, such as the spinal cord and other vital organs. In addition, the risk of side effects, such as respiratory and cardiac problems and loss of lung function, is greatly reduced as compared to traditional radiation therapy and surgery.
The accuracy of the CyberKnife means that treatments are more comfortable and patients can breathe normally as the robotic arm moves around body to various locations to deliver radiation. Nothing is required of the patient during treatment, except to relax and lie as still as possible. In most cases, treatments can be completed in as few as five sessions and patients can resume their normal activities the same day.
